I
was born in Los Angeles in 1972, the child of first generation immigrants who had come out west to mine the opportunities offered by the Golden State. At the age of three, my family moved to a small city surrounded by the eponymous orange groves of Orange County and gained the company of my younger brother.

I was an artistic juggernaut as a child, drawing ceaselessly and always receiving art materials from relatives who couldn’t help but notice my interest. In elementary school, I had the good fortune of working with an art educator who came to our class less often than I would have liked, but who encouraged everyone to “fill the negative space” and “don’t worry about mistakes, just keep drawing!” She didn’t believe in white areas on paper.

This teacher was a wonderful influence, and I can still hear her voice in my head as I make art and encourage everyone to make art that’s bigger than whatever canvas is at hand—as big as the Imagination. You’ll rarely find any image I create contained by the surface boundaries. What we can imagine is limitless, and it’s off the canvas that the real connection is made between me and the person viewing my art.

For a time, I did stop making art. Personal hardship from a young age until recently had evaporated any
safe space I felt was mine in the world. There was nowhere to be vulnerable with my creativity, to open
up and dream.

Now, I’ve established my own sanctuary and I can’t stop painting and drawing. I delve into my psyche and mine the memories and loves I had so long buried there—mythology, sensuality, and spirituality—and alloy this rich ore with patient attention to the world around me.

What you see in Ivan Chan Studio is the fusion of inner and outer realities, the evidence of prayer and communion with the greater whole of which we are all a part, in the form of art.

I am eternally grateful for the patronage of collectors from all parts of the world who have invited my work into their lives. They--and you--have made it possible for me to achieve my dream of being a professional fine artist.

Presently, I reside on the West Coast of the North American continent, at the edge of the seas and on the verge of a garden.

The majority of my work is fingerpainted with professional grade, non-toxic materials. I don't use brushes so I can be as close to my art as possible. This poses certain challenges that are both fun and frustrating to overcome, along with the reward of an original style. The unique finger strokes and marks make my paintings unmistakable and highly personal.
